You’ve probably seen them in period films or TV shows. Or perhaps an older person has talked to you about them. Lift attendants are a guild of historical professionals who used to work with lifts, easing the journey for those who used them, either by facilitating their move, organising passengers, or pressing required buttons. As in many sectors, the implementation of the latest technologies has led to the disappearance of the lift attendant’s job. Nowadays, it can refer to companies that manage and look after our lifts.
Lift companies are governed by Royal Decree 2291/1985, which has almost been entirely modified by RD 560/2010, and indicates the minimum requirements to be able to register as a lift maintenance company.
The job of lift attendant today
Today, the work of lift attendants entails a truly qualified and valuable job, as they are the people responsible for maintaining lifts and, therefore, ensuring their safety and compliance with current regulations. That is why they must be qualified technicians with higher professional training in mechatronics or industrial maintenance, including a certification of their knowledge to handling lifts and elevators.
Therefore, we refer to lift attendants as all those workers who are responsible for the assembly and disassembly of lifts and all their parts, those responsible for their installation or those who carry out routine inspections and maintenance.
Lift attendants are constantly-evolving professionals who must receive continuous training updated every three years so they are always prepared to offer the highest level of safety and requirements in the performance of their work.
